The first five rulers are known as the "Five Good Emperors." These leaders were Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, and Marcus Aurelius. They were known for being wise and kind.

Most of these men did not have sons to take their place. Instead, they used adoption. Adoption is a legal way to make a new family member. The leader would pick a person to be his heir. An heir is the person who takes over next.

Nerva adopted the leader Trajan. Trajan then chose Hadrian to follow him. Hadrian named Antoninus Pius as his son and heir. Antoninus Pius then picked Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus. Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus ruled together for a time.

After Verus died, Marcus Aurelius ruled alone. He was a gifted leader. When he died, his real son Commodus took over. Many people thought this was a bad choice. After Commodus was killed in 192, the dynasty ended.
