Memoirs of Hadrian is a famous novel by Marguerite Yourcenar.

She was a writer born in Belgium who lived in France. The book tells the story of a Roman Emperor named Hadrian. It is written as a long letter to his grandson, Marcus Aurelius.

Hadrian is an old man who is very sick. He wants to share his life story before he dies. This makes the book feel very personal and deep. It is a story about memory and looking back at a life.

The story moves through many parts of Hadrian's life.

He starts by talking about his childhood in a place called Italica. He describes his love for Greek art, music, and philosophy. The book follows him as he joins the army and fights in wars. He even talks about building a huge wall in Britain.

A big part of the story is his love for a young man named Antinous. Hadrian feels great sadness when Antinous dies in the Nile river. The book shows how he deals with both power and grief.

Yourcenar spent many years working on this book.

She first thought of the idea between 1924 and 1929. She wrote different drafts from 1934 to 1937. Later, she worked on it again starting in December 1948. She lived in New York and Connecticut during this time. She wanted the book to feel like a real history. She used old books like the Historia Augusta to help her.

This book was a very big success when it came out.

It was first published in France in 1951. An English version was published in 1954 by Farrar, Straus and Young. In 2019, experts voted it a great book. They said it was the sixth best French book of the 20th and 21st centuries. This is a very high honor for any writer to receive.

The book helps us see the ancient world in a new way. It looks at a time when old Roman gods were fading away. It also shows a time before Christianity was common. This reminded the author of the world after the wars in Europe. By reading it, we can imagine what it felt like to be a leader. We can see how people in the past felt about life and death.
