Animal welfare

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Animal welfare is the study of how animals live and feel. It looks at their overall well-being and quality of life. Scientists use many tools to measure this important topic. They look at how long animals live and if they stay healthy. They also study animal behavior and how they reproduce. Some people debate which of these things is the best way to measure welfare.

Many people believe that animals are sentient. Sentience means that animals can feel things like pain or pleasure. This belief leads people to care about how animals are treated by humans. We see this care in many different places. People think about animals kept as pets or in zoos. They also think about animals on farms or in circuses. We must also consider how human activities affect wild animals in nature.

Humans have tried to protect animals for a very long time. In India, Emperor Ashoka issued orders against hunting in the 3rd century BCE. In the 13th century, Genghis Khan protected wildlife in Mongolia during breeding seasons. Japan also had special laws for dogs under Tokugawa Tsunayoshi. In 1824, the first animal welfare organization called the SPCA was founded. Later, Queen Victoria gave the group her blessing in 1840.

Modern rules help keep animals safe and comfortable. In the 1960s, the UK government studied how farm animals lived. This led to the creation of the Five Freedoms. These guidelines say animals need to be able to stand, lie down, and stretch. They should also be able to turn around and groom themselves. In the US, the Animal Welfare Act was passed in 1966. India also has the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act from 1960.

Today, many groups work to make animal welfare better everywhere. Some want a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare at the United Nations. This would help the world recognize that animals are sentient beings. Organizations like World Animal Protection lead these big campaigns. They work with groups like the RSPCA and the Humane Society International. They want to ensure that animal welfare is a global priority for all nations.
