What does it mean to be aware? This is the big question of animal consciousness.

Consciousness is the state of being aware of things. This includes being aware of objects outside your body. It also means being aware of things inside yourself. For humans, it includes feelings and a sense of self. Scientists study if animals share these same qualities.

Some animals, like the grey parrot, show very high levels of awareness. This topic is very important for how we treat living things.

Studying animal minds is a hard job for many reasons.

Animals do not use human language to talk. This makes it difficult to know their inner thoughts. A philosopher named Thomas Nagel wrote about this in an essay. He used a bat as an example. He said we can never truly know what it is like to be a bat.

We can see how a bat acts. However, we cannot feel the world exactly as the bat does. This makes it hard to prove what is happening inside their minds.

People have had different ideas about this for a long time.

In the 17th century, René Descartes had a famous view. He believed that only humans had a mind. He thought animals were like machines that just reacted to things.

Later, some thinkers proposed a theory called epiphenomenalism. This idea suggested that consciousness is just a side effect of the brain. One scientist, Thomas Huxley, compared consciousness to a steam whistle. He said the whistle makes noise but does not move the train. This idea was debated by many people for many years.

Science has provided more answers over the last century.

In 1927, Harvey Carr studied how awareness works in humans. By 1985, researchers suggested using experiments to study how awareness grows. In 2012, a group of experts signed the Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness. They stated that humans are not the only ones with the brain parts that make consciousness.

This includes all birds and all mammals. They also mentioned that creatures like octopuses might have these brain parts too. In 2024, over 500 scientists signed the New York Declaration on Animal Consciousness to support these ideas.

These scientific ideas connect to how we see the world today.

Knowing if animals feel things changes how we act. For example, veterinarians in the U.S. were taught differently about animal pain before 1989. Now, we understand more about how animals experience the world. This helps us make better decisions about how to care for them. Understanding consciousness helps us see the deep links between all living things. It turns a mystery into a way to respect life.
