Many people believe animals are sentient. This means they can feel things. People care about how animals live in zoos or on farms. Some people also study how humans affect wild animals.

History shows we have cared for animals for a long time. An Indian leader named Ashoka made rules against hunting. In Japan, a leader named Tokugawa Tsunayoshi made laws for dogs. In 1824, people started the SPCA. This was a group to stop cruelty to animals.

Today, we have many rules. In the UK, a group made the Five Freedoms. These rules say animals should be able to stand up and stretch. They should also be able to turn around.

Groups like World Animal Protection want new global rules. They want the United Nations to help. They want everyone to see that animals can feel pain.
