Amber is a beautiful gemstone.

It starts as sticky tree resin. Resin is a thick juice from a tree.

Over a very long time, this resin changes. It turns into hard amber through a set of steps.

First, the resin must stay safe from rain and sun. If it breaks down, it will not become amber. Then, heavy layers of earth press down on it. High heat and pressure work on the resin. This turns it into copal. More heat and pressure then turn the copal into amber.

Sometimes, things get stuck in the sticky resin.

People have used it for jewelry for a long time. It can even hold a charge of static electricity. This is why the word "electric" comes from the Greek word for amber.
