Scientists study fossils. This study is called paleontology. They look at how fossils form. They also study how life changes over time. This change is called evolution. People use fossils to see how life grew on Earth.

In the past, people had many ideas about fossils. Ancient people thought some were dragon bones. Others thought they were magic. Some thought fossil teeth were tongues of snakes. Now we know the truth. We can use science to find their real age. We use a way called radiometric dating. This tells us how old a rock is. We can then know how old the fossil is too.
