Paleosol

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A paleosol is an ancient soil. It formed a long time ago. Then, it was buried. This might happen under sand or volcanic ash. Over many years, these layers can turn into rock.

Scientists use different names for these old soils. They often use a system from the USDA. This system helps them group soils by their parts. Some paleosols are very old. Some are over 2.5 billion years old!

Different settings make different soils. For example, an Andisol forms from volcanic ash. These soils are very fertile. This means they are great for growing plants.

Other soils come from forests. A Spodosol is a forest soil. It forms in places with lots of rain. These soils often have iron or aluminum in them. Some paleosols are very dry. In Australia, old soils dried out. They became very hard. This makes it hard for new plants to grow. But, these places can still have many different kinds of life.
