Plants make resin to stay safe. They leak it when they are hurt. It can stop bugs from eating them. It can also stop germs from growing. Some resins even help by calling in good bugs to fight the bad ones.

People have used resin for a very long time. In the Stone Age, people used it as glue. They used it to hold stone tools together. Today, we use it for many things. It can be used to make glue or varnish. It is also used in perfumes and incense. Some resins, like frankincense, are used in religious rites.

Some resins come from animals too. Shellac is a resin made by insects. There are also man-made resins. These are called synthetic resins. We use them to make things like epoxy glue.
