Plants, like pine trees, make them in large amounts. There are more than 30,000 kinds of these compounds. They often have strong or pleasant smells. These smells help plants in many ways. They can attract pollinators to flowers. They can also help plants defend against bugs. Some insects even use them for protection. For example, some termites spray a mix of terpenes to fight off enemies.

Terpenes are built from small units called isoprene.

Think of these like small building blocks. To make different types, the blocks link together in chains or rings. We name them by how many blocks they use. Monoterpenes use two units. Sesquiterpenes use three units. Diterpenes use four units.

People use terpenes for many jobs. Natural rubber is made from a terpene. Other terpenes are found in perfumes and soaps. Some are even used in medicines or to make food taste good.
