Citral is a special part of plant oils. It has a very strong lemon scent. Many plants have it in their oils. One tree from Australia is a great source. Its name is Backhousia citriodora.

Citral is made of two parts called isoprene units. It is actually a mix of two things. One is called geranial. The other is called neral. Geranial smells like citrus and lemon. Neral smells a bit less sweet.

People use citral in many ways. It is an aroma compound. This means it is used to make scents. It helps lemon oils smell fresh and juicy. It is also used in food. Some people use it to make vitamins. It helps make vitamin A and vitamin E. It also helps make vitamin K.

Citral can even help with bugs. Some plants with citral can stop pests. It can also fight tiny germs in food. This makes it a very useful part of nature.
