He said the waves washed amber up on shores. People in Germany used it for fuel and sold it. There was even a special path called the "Amber Road." This path connected the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean.

Amber is found in many places around the world today. About 90% of the world's amber is in the Kaliningrad Oblast. This area was once part of Prussia. In the 19th century, people found amber in New Jersey, USA. Another big source is Kachin State in northern Myanmar. This area has provided amber to China for 1,800 years. Some amber is found in coal seams, too. This special kind is called ambrite in New Zealand.

Amber has a very special connection to electricity. The Greek word for amber is *elektron*. This word gave us the modern word "electric." This happened because amber can hold a static charge. If you rub it, it can attract light things like leaves. Even the word "electron" comes from this history. A physicist named George Stoney coined that term in 1891. First, the resin transforms into an intermediate stage called copal. Continued heat and pressure eventually drive off terpenes and result in true amber.

Amber is chemically heterogeneous, meaning it is made of several different substances. It consists of resinous materials that can dissolve in alcohol, ether, or chloroform. It also contains an insoluble bituminous fraction. The material is a macromolecule formed by the polymerization of terpenoid precursors. In gymnosperms, these are often diterpenes like communic acid. In angiosperms, triterpenes usually dominate the composition. Most amber has a hardness between 2.0 and 2.5 on the Mohs scale. It has a specific gravity between 1.06 and 1.10 and a melting point between 250 and 300 °C.

History shows that humans have traded amber for millennia. In the 4th century BCE, Theophrastus and the traveler Pytheas both discussed the substance. Pytheas noted that waves washed amber onto the shores of an island called Abalus. This led to the creation of the "Amber Road," a trade route connecting the Baltic region to the Mediterranean. The Romans traded for amber from the southern Baltic as far back as the time of Nero. In China, the first written records of amber date back to 200 BCE. In North America, the first reports of amber came from New Jersey in the early 19th century.

Today, amber is found on or near every continent, mostly in rocks from the Cretaceous age or younger. The Kaliningrad Oblast in Russia is a major global source. Historically, the coast of Prussia was the world's leading source. Approximately 90% of the world's extractable amber is located in this specific area. Other important sources include Kachin State in Myanmar and the Rivne Oblast in Ukraine. In New Zealand, amber found specifically in coal seams is called ambrite. Amber found in other coal seams is known as resinite.

Amber has a unique relationship with physics and electricity. The ancient Greek word for amber is *elektron*. This term is linked to the word for the "beaming Sun." Because amber can hold a static electric charge, it can attract light objects like leaves or chaff. This property led to the derivation of the modern word "electric." In 1600, William Gilbert used the Latin *electricus*, meaning "amber-like." Later, in 1891, physicist George Stoney coined the word "electron" while studying elementary charges.
