These two companies are owned by families in Germany. They are known as discount supermarkets. This means they focus on keeping prices low for their customers. Today, they have over 13,500 stores in 18 different countries. They are a huge part of how people buy food around the world.

The way Aldi works is based on saving money.

The brothers who started it had a smart plan. They did not spend money on big advertisements. They also kept their stores small. If an item did not sell quickly, they removed it from the shelves. They even found ways to give customers a discount without using stamps. This helped them keep their costs very low. This way of working allowed them to grow very fast.

The story of Aldi began with two brothers named Karl and Theo Albrecht.

Their mother opened a small grocery store in Essen, Germany, in 1913. The brothers were born in 1920 and 1922. In 1945, they took over their mother's business. By 1950, they already owned 13 stores in the Ruhr Valley. In 1962, they chose the name Aldi. This name is a short way to say "Albrecht Diskont."

In 1960, the brothers decided to split their company into two groups. They had a disagreement about whether to sell cigarettes in their shops. This led to the creation of Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd.

These two groups have been separate businesses since 1966. Aldi Nord is based in Essen. Aldi Süd is based in Mülheim. Both groups are now owned by different private family foundations. They have grown into massive global companies with thousands of buildings.
