Aldi is a famous name for two big shop chains.

These chains are owned by families in Germany. They began with two brothers named Karl and Theo Albrecht. In 1945, they took over their mother's small shop.

The brothers had a way to keep costs low. They did not spend much on ads. They also kept their shops small. They even removed items that did not sell fast. This helped them save money.

In 1960, the brothers split the company into two groups. They had a disagreement about selling cigarettes. One group became Aldi Nord. The other group became Aldi Süd.

These two groups are separate businesses today. They have many stores in 18 different countries. You can find them in the United States and Australia. They also have many stores in Europe. Aldi Nord owns the Trader Joe's chain in America. Aldi Süd owns many stores in the UK and Italy. Both groups own thousands of buildings for their shops.
