Theo Albrecht was a famous businessman from Germany. He helped start the Aldi grocery store chain.

He wanted to sell high quality items for low prices. This idea helped the stores become very successful. He learned about selling food from his mother. He wanted a different life than his father. His father worked as a miner. Theo grew up to be a very wealthy person.

Theo and his brother Karl worked together at first. In 1946, they started a company called Albrecht Diskont.

Later, the brothers had a big disagreement. They could not agree on selling cigarettes in the stores. Because of this, they split the company in 1960. Theo ran Aldi Nord in the north of Germany. Karl ran Aldi Süd in the south of Germany. This split created two separate companies that still exist today.

Theo had a very interesting life history. He was born on March 28, 1922. In 1940, he joined the German Army when he was 18. He served in North Africa during a war. Later, Americans captured him in Tunisia. He returned to Germany in 1946 to start his business.

He lived a very private life for many years. He was known to be very reclusive. Some people even said he was more reclusive than a yeti.

In 1971, a serious event happened to Theo. He was kidnapped by two men.

They asked for seven million German marks to let him go. A bishop named Franz Hengsbach delivered the money. Theo was released safely after the payment. This event changed how he lived his life. He began driving to work in an armored car. He also used a different path every single day.

Theo was known for being very frugal. This means he liked to save money whenever he could. He often wore cheap suits that did not fit well. He liked to eat simple meals with many potatoes. He even used tiny pencil stubs until they were gone. He once told workers to use thinner paper for store plans. He thought thinner paper would save the company money.

He died on July 24, 2010, in his home city of Essen. In 2010, Forbes said he was the 31st richest person in the world.
