Pilots fly planes to spray things like seeds or plant rice. They also spread food for plants, which is called topdressing.

This work helps protect crops from many things. In the USA, about 25% of pesticides on commercial farms are spread this way. Also, almost all products used in forestry are applied from the air.

These planes are very special and built for a hard job.

Many use strong turbine engines to fly. Some can carry a huge amount of crop protection products. Helicopters are sometimes used for this work too. Some aircraft even do two jobs at once. They can act as water bombers to fight wildfires. These are called SEATs, or single engine air tankers.

People have been doing this for a long time.

In 1906, John Chaytor used a hot air balloon in New Zealand. He spread seed over a swamped valley floor. The first use of a plane happened on August 3, 1921. An engineer named Etienne Dormoy helped lead this work. A pilot named John A. Macready flew a Curtiss JN4 Jenny. They used it to spread lead arsenate near Troy, Ohio.

Commercial work began in 1924 in Macon, Georgia.

A company called Huff-Daland Crop Dusting started it. One of its founders was a pilot named Harold R. Harris. The name "crop dusting" came from spreading actual dust. In 1951, Leland Snow designed the first special plane called the S-1. Later, in 1957, the Grumman G-164 Ag-Cat was made. Today, many models like the Air Tractor are very common.

New technology is changing how this work happens. Since the late 1990s, people use unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs. These are drones that fly without a person inside. This started in Japan and South Korea for small farms. In the USA, drones like the Yamaha R-MAX help in vineyards. However, some countries have strict rules about spraying. The European Union limited many sprays in 2009 to prevent spray drift. This helps keep the environment and people safe.
