A defoliant is a special chemical spray. It is used to make leaves fall off plants. People use these chemicals in many ways. Farmers use them to remove weeds from lawns and crops. This helps the good plants grow better. Using these sprays helped increase food production during the mid-20th century. This time was known as the Green Revolution.

Some defoliants work by changing how a plant grows. Two old types are called 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T. These are known as phenoxy herbicides. These chemicals enter the leaves of broad-leafed plants. Once inside, they cause the plant to have too much growth. This excessive growth eventually kills the plant. This is a way to kill weeds without hurting other things.

These chemicals have a long history. The first phenoxy herbicides appeared at the start of World War II. They became very common in farming after the war ended. Defoliants also have a history in warfare. The United Kingdom used them during the Malayan Emergency in the 1950s. The United States used them during the Vietnam War from 1961 to 1971. They used a group of chemicals called Rainbow Herbicides.

There are many specific names for these chemicals. In the United States, farmers use tribufos and thidiazuron. A 1998 report from the USDA NASS showed their use. These two chemicals covered 60% of treated crop areas that year. Cotton farmers also use chemicals like dimethipin. Using these helps them harvest cotton more easily. It can even help make the lint quality better.

We must also understand the risks these chemicals bring. The U.S. EPA found they can contaminate water. This can be dangerous for fish and other marine life. Some chemicals, like tribufos, might cause cancer. Agent Orange was a mix of 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T. It also had dioxin contaminants inside it. This mixture caused long-term health issues for many people. Farmers may also face higher risks from these sprays.
