Agent Orange was a strong chemical liquid used to kill plants.

It is known as a herbicide and a defoliant. A herbicide is a substance used to kill weeds. A defoliant is a substance that makes leaves fall off plants. Agent Orange was a mixture of two parts called 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T. These two parts were mixed in equal amounts.

The liquid also contained a tiny amount of a very dangerous toxin. This toxin is named 2,3,7,8-TCDD.

This toxin is a type of dioxin. It is very hard to remove from the environment.

This chemical works by attacking the green parts of plants. When sprayed, it causes leaves to drop off trees and crops. The U.S. military used it to clear thick jungles. They wanted to stop people from hiding in the trees. They also sprayed it on food crops to limit food supplies.

The TCDD toxin is especially harmful to living things. It is fat-soluble, which means it can build up in the body. It can enter a person through skin contact or by eating things it has touched. Once inside, it can change how genes work in a cell. If the chemical is not on leaves or soil, it dries and breaks down quickly in sunlight.

Scientists first studied these chemicals many years ago. In 1943, a botanist named Arthur Galston studied these substances at the University of Illinois. He wanted to help soybeans grow faster. He discovered that high amounts of these chemicals could make leaves fall off. During World War II, the United States and the United Kingdom tried to make these as weapons. The U.S. Army tested mixtures in Florida in 1945. They even planned to use them in 1946 if the war had continued. Later, the British used similar chemicals in Malaya during the 1950s.

The most famous use was during the Vietnam War from 1962 to 1971. This program was called Operation Ranch Hand.

The military sprayed over 20 million liters of Agent Orange. They used helicopters, low-flying planes, trucks, and boats. By 1971, about 12 percent of South Vietnam had been sprayed. This caused huge damage to the land. Many forests were destroyed, and it became very hard for new trees to grow. Some areas had toxin levels hundreds of times higher than what is considered safe.

Agent Orange has caused serious health and nature problems. The government of Vietnam says up to four million people were exposed. They estimate up to three million people suffered illnesses.

In the United States, many veterans faced health issues too. These included cancers like leukemia and Hodgkin's lymphoma. The CDC also found more birth defects in children of exposed veterans. Many people have filed lawsuits to ask for help with these damages. The use of the chemical changed the environment and the lives of many people for a long time.
