High in the sky, a layer of gas protects our world. This is the ozone layer. It is very important because it stops harmful UVB light from the sun. This light can cause skin cancer, sunburn, and even blindness in humans. It can also hurt plants and animals.

Without this layer, life on Earth would face many hard jobs.

Ozone works through a special cycle. It is made when oxygen gas absorbs light from the sun. This splits the gas into single oxygen atoms. These atoms then join with other oxygen molecules to create ozone.

Ozone is the only gas that can absorb UVB light. When it absorbs this light, the ozone splits apart again. Then, the pieces join back together to make new ozone. This keeps the layer working constantly.

In the 1930s, a man named Thomas Midgley Jr. invented CFCs. These are chemicals used in air conditioning and spray cans. These man-made chemicals are called ozone-depleting substances. They float up into the stratosphere, which is a high part of the atmosphere.

Once there, sunlight breaks them apart. This releases atoms like chlorine and bromine. These atoms act like tools that break ozone apart. One chlorine atom can destroy 100,000 ozone molecules!

Scientists noticed the ozone layer was thinning in the late 1970s. They saw a huge decrease in ozone over Antarctica. This is often called the ozone hole. In 1985, researchers reported that ozone over Antarctica had dropped by 70 percent. This was a big surprise to many people.

To fix this, leaders signed the Montreal Protocol in 1987. This agreement banned many harmful chemicals. The ban began to work in 1989.

Because of these rules, the ozone layer is healing. Ozone levels stayed steady in the mid-1990s. They began to recover in the 2000s.

In 2019, NASA said the ozone hole was the smallest ever since it was found in 1982. The UN thinks the layer will be fully fixed by 2045. This shows how much people can help the Earth when they work together.
