Ultraviolet index

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The ultraviolet index, or UV index, is a special scale. It measures the strength of ultraviolet radiation from the sun. This radiation can cause sunburns on our skin. It can also cause eye damage or skin aging. Some amounts of sunlight are actually good for us. However, too much radiation can cause serious health problems. The UV index helps us know when to be careful.

This scale works in a very direct way. It is a linear scale. This means the numbers show the true intensity. For example, a UV index of 12 is twice as strong as a 6. If you burn in 30 minutes at a 6, you might burn in 15 minutes at a 12. The index is calculated using many different factors. Computers look at how far the Earth is from the sun. They also check the amount of ozone in the air. They look at clouds, the height of the land, and even snow.

Scientists in Canada invented this modern scale. Three men named James B. Kerr, C. Thomas McElroy, and David I. Wardle created it. They worked in Toronto, Ontario. They first used it in weather forecasts on May 27, 1992. This made Canada the first country to predict UV levels. In 1994, two big groups helped make it a global standard. These were the World Health Organization and the World Meteorological Organization. In 2007, the United Nations gave the inventors an award.

There are many different levels on the index. A reading of 0 means there is no UV radiation. This usually happens at night. A reading of 10 is very strong sunlight. This is common in the tropics during the summer. In 2003, a huge reading of 43.3 was found at a volcano in Bolivia. Most weather reports are very close to the real number. They are usually within one unit of the true measurement. This helps people plan their day safely.

Knowing the index helps you stay safe outdoors. If the index is 3 or higher, you should protect yourself. You can wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. It is also good to use sunscreen. When the index is very high, try to stay in the shade. This is especially important between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Surfaces like sand, water, and snow can reflect the light. This makes the UV rays even stronger for your skin.
