The air we breathe is not always clean. Scientists use a tool called the Air Quality Index, or AQI, to track this.

The AQI is an approximation of how polluted the air is right now. It can also predict how polluted the air might become later. As pollution levels rise, the AQI score goes up too. Higher scores mean there are more risks to public health.

Different countries use their own versions of this index. These indices match the specific air quality standards of each nation.

Calculating the AQI involves a few specific steps. First, experts use air monitors or models to measure pollutants. They look at the concentration of a pollutant over a set amount of time. This combination of amount and time represents a dose.

Scientists use research to see how these doses affect health. Different pollutants have different levels of potency. Because of this, the math used to turn a measurement into an AQI score changes depending on the pollutant. The final AQI is often grouped into ranges with colors and advice.

Many different places have developed their own ways to report air quality.

In Australia, each state monitors its own air quality. They use a simple scale where 100 is the maximum allowed concentration. Canada uses the Air Quality Health Index, which uses a scale from 1 to 10+. This tool helps people decide how to change their activities to stay safe. In Hong Kong, a new index was started in late 2013. Mainland China monitors pollution in 163 major cities using the Ministry of Environmental Protection.

There are many specific things that scientists look for in the air. They monitor ground-level ozone, sulfur dioxide, and carbon monoxide. They also check for nitrogen dioxide and particulates. Particulates are tiny bits of matter in the air.

Some particulates are very small, like PM2.5 or PM10. In Australia, the maximum standard for carbon monoxide is 9 ppm over 8 hours. For nitrogen dioxide, the 1-hour standard is 0.12 ppm. These numbers help experts know when the air reaches unsafe levels.

Understanding the AQI helps us know how to live safely. When the AQI is high, the air might be dirty due to traffic or forest fires. Stagnant air can also trap pollution in one place. If the AQI is poor, sensitive groups like children or the elderly might need to stay inside. Some people might even wear masks or use air purifiers. In very serious cases, governments might ask big industries to stop emitting smoke. This helps keep the air safer for everyone in the community.
