Scientists created the UV index to help us. It is a scale that measures UV strength. The index is a linear scale. This means the numbers show the real power. A UV index of 12 is twice as strong as a 6.

In 1992, scientists in Canada made this scale. They wanted to help people stay safe. Later, world health groups made it a global standard. This helps everyone use the same numbers.

When the index is 3 or higher, you should protect yourself. You can wear a hat or sunglasses. It is also smart to use sunscreen.

Some places have very high numbers. High mountains or places with ice can have more UV. This is because snow and water reflect the light. You should check the UV index to play safely in the sun.
