The land in Zhejiang has a very distinct shape. About 70% of the total area is made of hills. These hills get higher as you move toward the south and the west. A river called the Qiantang River runs through the province. This river is so important that the province takes its name from it. Zhejiang also has a very long coastline. In fact, it has a longer coastline than any other mainland province in China.

Zhejiang has a long and busy history. Many thousands of years ago, people lived in settlements like Kuahuqiao and Liangzhu. Later, the Kingdom of Yue ruled parts of the area. In 222 BC, the Qin dynasty took control of the land. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the ports became huge centers for trade. After the People's Republic of China was formed, the economy was slow for a while. However, after new reforms, Zhejiang grew to become one of the wealthiest provinces in the country.
