Zeta Ophiuchi

space Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Zeta Ophiuchi is a massive star in the constellation of Ophiuchus. It is the third-brightest star in that group of stars. This star is also very close to our own Solar System. It is the nearest O-class star to us.

An O-class star is a very hot and bright type of star. This star is quite young and is only three million years old. It is a very interesting part of our night sky.

This star works by using nuclear fusion in its core. This is a way it makes energy by joining hydrogen together.

The star is huge and has 20 times the mass of our Sun. It is also eight times wider than the Sun. It spins very fast, perhaps once every single day. Because it spins so fast, the heat is not the same everywhere. The poles are as hot as 39,000K. The equator is cooler at 30,700K.

Scientists have studied this star for a long time. In 1979, they looked at its spectrum. They found moving bumps in its helium lines. This discovery led people to name a group of stars after it. These are now called Zeta Ophiuchi stars.

These bumps come from non-radial pulsations. This means the star's surface moves in a special way. It also shows how the star's light changes over time.

Zeta Ophiuchi has many unique facts about its movement. It moves through space at 30 km per second. This speed makes it a runaway star.

As it moves, it hits thick clouds of dust. This creates a bow shock that looks like a wave. NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer helped us see this shock. The star also loses a lot of mass every year. It loses the mass of our Sun every nine million years.

This star is linked to many ancient stories. In Arabic traditions, it was part of a group called al-Nasaq al-Yamānī. This name means "the Southern Line." In China, it was part of an asterism called the Right Wall of Heavenly Market Enclosure.

This group represented eleven old states in China. One of those states was called Han. Understanding these names helps us see how people have watched the stars for ages.
