This star is a supergiant, which means it is huge. It has used up the hydrogen fuel in its core. Because the fuel is gone, the star grew very large. It is now about 235 times the size of our Sun. The star has a warm, orange color. This happens because its outer layer has a temperature of about 3,800 Kelvin. It is also a double star. A smaller companion star stays very close to it.

Looking at Pi Puppis can lead to more discoveries. Every year in late April, something special happens near it. A meteor shower appears in the sky. These are called the Pi Puppids. They come from a comet named 26P/Grigg–Skjellerup. The number of meteors can change each year. This makes the shower a variable event. It is a wonderful way to watch the sky.
