Zeta Ophiuchi is a very big star.

Sig12-014
Sig12-014

It sits in a group of stars called Ophiuchus. This star is the third brightest in that group. It is also a very young star. It is only three million years old.

This star is much larger than our Sun. It has 20 times the mass of the Sun. It is also eight times wider. The star is very hot. It looks blue to us. The heat at the poles is 39,000K. The heat at the equator is lower. This happens because the star spins very fast. It might spin once every day.

Zeta Ophiuchi moves fast through space. It hits thick clouds of dust. This makes a shape called a bow shock.

You can see this shape in infrared light.

One day, this star will change. It will grow into a red supergiant. It will become wider than the orbit of Jupiter. Then, it will end with a supernova. A supernova is a giant explosion. After the explosion, a small object might stay behind. This could be a neutron star or a pulsar.
