Habu is known for his incredible skill and his many championships. He has won many major titles, which are the highest honors in the game. He was the first person to hold seven major titles at the same time. These titles include the Ryūō, Meijin, Ōi, Ōza, Kiō, Ōshō, and Kisei. He is also the only player to qualify for seven lifetime titles. This means he played at a world-class level for a very long time.

Habu's journey started when he was a young student in elementary school. His classmates taught him how the shogi pieces move. He loved the game so much that he entered a tournament in 1978. Even though he lost his first tournament, he kept practicing every weekend. He improved very quickly and became an amateur 5-dan at age eleven. In 1982, he joined an apprentice school to study under Tatsuya Futakami. By 1985, at only 14 years old, he became a professional 4-dan player. He was only the third person in history to become a professional so young.

His professional career is full of amazing records and big wins. In 1989, he won the Ryūō championship at age 19. This made him the youngest titleholder ever at that time. He has held at least one major title every single year since 1989. In 1996, he reached a huge milestone by holding all seven major titles at once. He also holds the record for the most total wins in shogi history. By June 2019, he reached 1,434 wins, which was more than any other player. Later, in 2025, he became the first pro to reach 1,600 official wins.

People are often amazed by the way Habu plays the game. He is great at using a piece called the silver for both attacking and defending. There are even certain squares on the board called "Habu's zone." This is because he is so good at using pieces on those specific spots. Other players call his clever moves "Habu's magic." This is because he can find ways to win even when a game looks lost. He is very good at making great moves during the final part of a match. His rival, Toshiyuki Moriuchi, said Habu gets stronger as other players get stronger.

Because of his many successes, Habu has received many special honors. In 2018, he became the first shogi professional to win Japan's People's Honour Award. He also received the Medal with Purple Ribbon that same year. These awards show how much people in Japan respect his talent and hard work. He has also served as the president of the Japan Shogi Association. Even when he faces new, younger players like Sōta Fujii, he continues to compete at a high level. His long career shows how much passion he has for the game of shogi.
