Yiwu is most famous for being a global hub for trade. It is home to the Yiwu International Trade City. This is the largest wholesale market for small goods in the world. People from all over the planet come here to buy items in large amounts.

This trading culture started a very long time ago. In the past, the soil was not good for farming. Because of this, people relied on trading instead of growing crops. They used a system called "sugar-for-chicken feathers." Peddlers would swap sugar for feathers used for dusters or fertilizer. The city was first known as Wushang City in 222 BCE. Later, it became Yiwu County in 624 CE.

One old landmark is the Guyue Bridge from the year 1213.

Modern Yiwu grew quickly after market reforms began in 1978. In 1982, the local government built permanent stalls near Huqingmen Street. This helped create the foundation for the massive trade city we see today. By 1988, Yiwu was upgraded to a county-level city. In 1992, the main hub was named "China Small Commodities City." Today, the market is managed by the China Commodities City Group. This group helps organize the market into different districts for different goods.

The market sells almost everything you can imagine. You can find jewelry, toys, textiles, and home goods there. In 2013, more than 60% of Christmas trinkets sold globally came from Yiwu. Many traders from the Middle East and Africa live in the city too. You might hear Russian, Persian, or Arabic spoken on the streets. Some areas even have Arabic signs and halal restaurants. This makes the city feel like a very diverse, global place.

Moving goods is a huge part of how Yiwu works. The city is a key part of the Belt and Road Initiative. It is the start of the Yiwu-Madrid railway line. This is the longest goods railway in the world. It stretches over 13,000 km through Central Asia to reach Europe. Trains carry containers to cities like Madrid, London, and Moscow. This rail path helps connect Yiwu to many different countries across the world.
