Long ago, the soil was poor for farming. This meant people could not grow much food. Instead, they learned to trade. They even had a system to swap sugar for chicken feathers.

Today, Yiwu is famous for its huge market. The Yiwu International Trade City is the largest wholesale market in the world.

Traders come from many far lands. People from Africa and the Middle East live and work there. You can hear many different languages in the city. Some areas even have shops and signs in Arabic.

Many small goods are sold here. This includes jewelry, toys, and lights. In 2013, most Christmas trinkets in the world came from Yiwu.

Trains help move goods to other parts of the world. The Yiwu-Madrid rail line is the longest goods railway. It travels over 13,000 km to reach Europe. This line connects Yiwu to cities like Madrid and London.
