Xu Shichang was an important leader in China. He lived from 1855 to 1939.

He served as the President of China for a long time. His term lasted from 1918 to 1922. This was a very busy time called the Warlord Era. Most leaders back then were soldiers. Xu was different because he was a civilian. This means he was not part of the military. He was the only civilian to hold this job permanently during that era.

Xu had many different jobs in his life. He started by working for the old Qing dynasty. He was a minister in the Imperial Cabinet. He even served as a tutor for the last emperor, Puyi.

Xu taught the young emperor about English and history. Later, China changed into a republic. Xu became a minister for the new leader, Yuan Shikai. He even served as the chief of the general staff. He was a very busy man with many roles.

Being president was a very hard job for Xu. He did not have his own army to help him.

Instead, he had to balance different powerful groups. He worked between leaders named Duan Qirui and Cao Kun. He also had to manage Zhang Zuolin. He tried to stay neutral to keep peace. This helped him stay in power for several years. It was a constant game of balance.

Some big events happened during his time in office. In 1918, he held a huge party in Beijing. This was to celebrate China's victory in World War I.

Later, things became difficult for the people. Students held large protests known as the May Fourth Movement. This happened because of a treaty made in France. Xu had to arrest many people during these protests. He also could not bring back Outer Mongolia to China.

Eventually, the pressure from other leaders became too much. Cao Kun wanted Xu to leave his post. Xu retired from his political life after this.

He moved to a place called the British concession in Tianjin. He lived there until he died in 1939. He was 83 years old when he passed away. His life showed how much China was changing. He lived through the end of an empire and the start of a republic.
