The Warlord Era was a period of great change in China. It lasted from 1916 to 1928. During these years, the country was not ruled by one leader. Instead, control was split between many rival military groups.

These groups were called cliques. They fought each other to gain power and land. This era changed how people in China lived and how the government worked. It was a time of much chaos and many difficult choices.

This era started because of a power vacuum. A power vacuum happens when a leader dies and no one is ready to take their place. The leader was Yuan Shikai, the President of China.

Yuan had worked to make himself very powerful. He even tried to become an emperor. When he died on June 6, 1916, there was no strong person to hold the country together. Many military strongmen quickly stepped in to grab control. They used their armies to rule different parts of the land.

Different groups fought for control in different places. In the north, the Beiyang Army was a very strong force.

There were three main cliques that fought for power. The Zhili clique was led by Feng Guozhang. The Anhui clique was led by Duan Qirui. The Fengtian clique was led by Zhang Zuolin in Manchuria. These leaders often fought wars against each other. They fought to decide who would be the true leader of China.

Many leaders were very harsh during this time.

Warlords often treated their soldiers and the people very poorly. They focused on keeping their own territory. They were often suspicious of others. Sometimes, officers even betrayed their leaders for money. In the south, Sun Yat-sen tried to build a different kind of government. He led the Kuomintang, also called the KMT.

He wanted to create a real national army to stop the fighting.

Eventually, the country began to come back together. After Sun Yat-sen died in 1925, Chiang Kai-shek became a leader.
