From 1916 to 1928, China went through a time called the Warlord Era.

It began after the death of Yuan Shikai. He was the President of China. After he died, there was no single leader to hold the country together.

Instead, many military groups fought for power. These leaders were called warlords. They led their own armies. They often fought to take new land or to keep what they had.

Some of the strongest groups were the Zhili, Anhui, and Fengtian cliques. These were groups of leaders who worked together.

Life was very hard during this time. The fighting caused much chaos. Warlords were often very harsh to people. They also fought with each other often. Some leaders even betrayed their own friends to get more power.

Sun Yat-sen led a group called the Kuomintang.

He wanted to build a strong new army. After he died, Chiang Kai-shek took over. He led a big march to bring the country back together. In 1928, China was mostly unified again.
