Xu Shichang was a leader in China. He lived from 1855 to 1939. He worked for the old Qing dynasty. He even taught the last emperor, Puyi. He taught him about history and English. Later, China became a republic. Xu became a high leader in this new government. He was the president from 1918 to 1922.

Xu was a civilian. This means he was not a soldier. Most leaders at that time were military men. He had to work with many groups. He tried to keep peace between them. He held a big party in Beijing. This was to celebrate China's win in World War I.

Things became hard later. Some leaders made deals that people did not like. This led to large student protests. Xu had to arrest many people during this time. He also could not win back Outer Mongolia. In 1920, fighting broke out in Southern China. Soon, other leaders pressured him to leave. Xu moved to Tianjin. He died there at age 83.
