He was part of a group called the Third Generation directors. This means he helped lead a new era of filmmaking in his country. He made more than 20 films during his long career. Many people in China loved his work. Six of his movies won the Best Picture prize at the Hundred Flowers Awards. He was also very special in the global film world. He was the only Chinese director to join both the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Directors Guild of America.

Xie Jin learned many skills to become a great director. He started by studying at several different schools in China. He spent time at the Huaguang Drama School and the Jinxing Film Training School. He even went to the Jiang'an National Drama School in Sichuan. While he was a student, he worked as an actor and a writer. He also served as a stage manager for a play group. These many roles helped him understand how to tell stories on a screen. He studied under famous teachers like Huang Zuolin and Wu Renzhi.

His journey into movies began with a very special film. In 1957, he directed a movie called Woman Basketball Player No. 5. This was the first color sports film made in the People's Republic of China. The movie was a big success and won prizes in other places too. It won a silver prize at the 6th International Youth Film Festival. It also won the Silver Hat Prize in Mexico in 1958. This early success helped him become a well-known name in cinema.

Throughout his life, Xie Jin made many important movies. His film The Red Detachment of Women won prizes in 1964. Another film, Two Stage Sisters, won the Sutherland Trophy in London in 1980. He also directed the movie The Opium War in 1997. He faced very hard times during the Cultural Revolution in China. During this time, he lost his parents to political pressure. Even though these years were sad, he continued to make films about that era. He waited until China began to open up to tell those stories.

Xie Jin's life ended in October 2008 in his hometown of Shangyu. He was found in a hotel room on the morning of October 18. Many people felt very sad when he passed away. Hundreds of celebrities and thousands of other people went to his funeral. They went there to show him great respect for his life and art.
