Xiamen Island is a special place in China. It sits in the Taiwan Strait. You can find it in the southeastern part of Fujian. Some people also call it Amoy Island. This name comes from the Hokkien way of speaking. It is a very busy and important island.

The island is split into two main parts. These are the Huli and Siming urban districts. These districts belong to the city of Xiamen. The island is the core of a special economic zone. This zone helps with trade and business. It is a major center for the whole area.

Many landmarks sit near the edges of the island. To the north, there is the Gaoji Causeway. To the west, you will find the old Yundang Harbor. That harbor is now an enclosed lake. To the southeast, the Kinmen Islands are nearby. Those islands are controlled by the Republic of China.

A huge number of people live on this land. The population is 1,847,047 people. This makes the island a very crowded place. It is a lively spot in the sea. The island is part of the People's Republic of China. It is a key part of the Fujian region.

Learning about Xiamen helps us understand the sea. It shows how islands can be big centers for people. You can see how names change when people speak. It also shows how old harbors can become lakes. The island connects many different parts of the coast. It is a unique piece of the world.
