Long ago, the area was part of Bao'an County. In the 12th century, it was a place to trade salt and spices. Later, in the 13th century, the area was known for making pearls. The name Shenzhen might come from a deep drain in a field.

In 1979, the area officially became a city. This change helped it grow into the place it is today.

Shenzhen has grown very fast with many impressive numbers. In 1980, the population was only 30,000 people. By 2020, the population reached 17.5 million people.
