Some heavy things are moved by men using wooden carts. These carts are pulled up steep lanes by strong teams of men. The streets are often narrow and winding. This makes the island a quiet and unique place to explore.

The island has a very long and interesting history. For a time, it was an international settlement. This was a place where people from many different countries lived together. In 1902, the government of the Qing dynasty approved rules for the land. Eventually, 13 different countries had special rights on the island. These included Great Britain, France, the Netherlands, and Japan.
