The deep waters of the harbour are perfect for large trade ships. This deep water helped the island grow into a major center for business.

The island has a long and varied history. People lived in the area 6,000 years ago. We know this from old tools found in Stanley. Later, the island was part of different Chinese dynasties. During the Ming dynasty, it belonged to Xin'an County. In 1842, the island was given to the United Kingdom.

This day is sometimes called "Black Christmas" by local people. During the occupation, food was scarce and many people had to leave. The population dropped from 1.6 million to 600,000 by 1945.

Today, the island is a huge center for money and government.
