Victoria Peak

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Victoria Peak is a famous hill on the western side of Hong Kong Island. It is the tallest hill on the island. Many people simply call it "The Peak." This area includes other hills like Mount Kellett and Mount Gough. It is also near Victoria Gap and Bowen Hill. From the top, you can see many amazing things. You can look out over Central and Victoria Harbour. You can also see Lamma Island and other islands nearby.

Getting to the top has changed a lot over time. In the 1800s, the climb was very steep. People used sedan chairs to reach their homes. These were chairs carried by people up the hills. In 1888, a new way to travel opened. It was called the Peak Tram. This is a funicular railway that carries people up the slope. Today, you can also take a taxi or a private car. Some people even enjoy walking up the steep Old Peak Road.

People have lived on the Peak for a very long time. In the 1800s, Europeans liked the hill. They liked the cool weather there. It was much different from the hot weather in the rest of Hong Kong. In 1868, a summer home was built for the Governor. Many early houses had funny names like "The Eyrie." For many years, there were strict rules about who could live there. Between 1904 and 1947, Chinese people were not allowed to live on the Peak. Robert Hotung was the first Chinese person to live there in the 1920s.

Today, the Peak is a very special place for many reasons. It is a major spot for tourists. About seven million people visit every year to see the views. You can find large shopping centres like the Peak Tower and Peak Galleria. There are also many restaurants to visit. Some buildings, like the Peak Lookout Restaurant, are very old. The summit has a radio station that is closed to the public.

Nature is also a big part of life on the hill. Many different living things make their homes here. You might see many kinds of butterflies flying around. Black kite birds are also very common to see. If you are lucky, you might spot a wild boar or a porcupine. You might even see a snake in the greenery. The Peak is a busy place where people, animals, and history all meet.
