Lion Rock is a famous mountain in Hong Kong.

It sits in the Sha Tin District. It lies between Kowloon Tong and Tai Wai. The mountain is part of the Lion Rock Country Park. The peak is made of granite. This rock is about 140 million years old. It is much older than the volcanic rocks found at Tai Mo Shan.

The mountain has a very special shape. It looks like a crouching lion. You can see this best from San Po Kong and Choi Hung. A trail winds up the forested hillside. This path leads to the top of the "lion's head."

Hikers can follow the trail across the lion's profile. This path eventually links up with the MacLehose Trail. From the top, you can see the city and Hong Kong Island.

Many animals live on the mountain. Longtailed macaques live in the trees. These monkeys are descendants of pets released in the 1920s. The government introduced them to eat a vine called Mikania micrantha. This helped protect the trees near reservoirs. You might also see venomous snakes at night. The Bamboo Pit Viper is often seen in the bushes. It is responsible for most snake bites in Hong Kong.

Hiking on Lion Rock can be a hard job. The government calls the summit a high risk location. Some parts of the trail are rocky and have no fences. It is dangerous to take shortcuts or selfies near the cliffs. The trail is very dark after the sun goes down. Hikers should bring a strong flashlight and extra batteries. You should also bring plenty of water on hot days.

Lion Rock is a big part of Hong Kong's history. After World War II, many people lived in squatters nearby. They could always see the mountain from their homes. A famous TV series called "Below the Lion Rock" showed this time. The show's theme song is linked to the "Lion Rock Spirit." This spirit represents the "can-do" attitude of the people. Even the Brand Hong Kong logo uses a silhouette of the rock.
