He lived during a time when many different groups were fighting for power. He was born in Suizhong in northeastern China. His father, Wu Xiang, was a soldier who fought in many battles. Because of his family, Wu learned about war and politics very early. He was also a very talented student of art. Historians say he was a handsome general with a scar on his nose. He was also very skilled at riding horses and using a bow.

Wu became a leader while he was still very young. When he was only 20, he was already a guerrilla general. One time, he used only 20 soldiers to rescue his father from an enemy. This brave act impressed many leaders, including the Manchu leader Hong Taiji. Later, Wu became the general in charge of Ningyuan. He built a very strong army of 20,000 troops there. He even picked 1,000 elite soldiers to be his personal bodyguards. These men were trained by Wu himself to be fearless.

Life was often difficult and full of many battles. In 1641, Wu fought in the Battle of Songjin. He was seen as a very outstanding general during this time. However, there were also very hard moments of loss. During a battle at Songshan, many Ming soldiers were killed. Wu had to find a way to escape the fighting. He managed to survive by using a clever retreat plan. Even after such hard times, the Ming emperor promoted him. This surprised many other officials in the government.

In 1644, a huge change happened in China. A rebel army led by Li Zicheng took over Beijing. The rebels also captured Wu's father and his family. This made Wu very angry and he felt he had to act. He was stuck between the rebels and the Manchu people. To fight the rebels, Wu decided to help the Manchus. He opened the gates at Shanhai Pass.
