Shi Lang was a famous Chinese admiral from the 1600s. He was born in 1621 in a place called Fujian. He spent his youth studying how to lead armies. He became very good at naval warfare, which means fighting on the sea. He was known for being very strong and fierce in battle. However, the Kangxi Emperor said he was also quite rude. He lacked basic manners and courtesy in his daily life.

Shi Lang's life changed when he switched sides during a war. He first worked for the Zheng family's naval fleet. He served as a captain for many years. In 1646, he left the Zheng family to join the Qing dynasty. This was a very hard choice for him. Because he switched sides, the Zheng family killed his father, brother, and son. This loss was a heavy part of his history.

The Qing rulers valued Shi Lang for his great sea experience. They also liked his many contacts in trading ports. In 1656, he worked with Prince Jidu in Fujian. He eventually became an Assistant Brigadier-General. Later, in 1663, he led Dutch ships and men during a campaign. He even wrote a plan in 1668 to help the Qing reach Taiwan. His deep knowledge of the ocean made him a vital leader.

In 1683, Shi Lang led a massive mission to Taiwan. He took 300 warships and 20,000 soldiers from Tongshan. On July 16, he fought a big battle near the Pescadores. He defeated the leader of the Zheng navy, Liu Guoxuan. By October, Shi Lang reached Taiwan and won their surrender. He worked hard to make Taiwan part of the Qing Empire. The Emperor agreed and made Taiwan a part of Fujian province in 1684.

Shi Lang was given many honors for his hard work. He became a marquis and a special sea general. He even wore an honorary peacock feather. But he was also a difficult ruler in Taiwan. He took much land for himself and collected money from local people. Some people today call him a hero for his victories. Others call him a traitor or a cruel governor. He died in 1696 after a long life of service.
