Winterreise, which means "Winter Journey," is a famous set of 24 songs.

It is a song cycle for a singer and a piano. A song cycle is a group of songs that belong together. These songs use poems written by the German poet Wilhelm Müller.

The music tells the story of a lonely traveler. He is very sad because the person he loved chose someone else. He leaves his town at night to walk through the cold. He travels past rivers, steep paths, and a quiet cemetery. The journey feels like a long, lonely walk through a dark winter.

In this music, the piano is just as important as the singer. The piano does not just play background notes. It helps show the world around the traveler. The piano can sound like a rushing storm or a crying wind. It can mimic the sound of a bird singing or a raven croaking. It even makes the sound of a creaky weathervane or a street musician's hurdy-gurdy. The rhythms in the piano show how the man feels inside. For example, some songs use sharp notes to show a storm. Other songs use restless patterns to show his nervous feelings.

Franz Schubert composed these songs in two separate parts. He wrote the first twelve songs in February 1827. He wrote the next twelve songs in October 1827.

Schubert found the first poems in an almanack from 1823. Later, he found the rest of the poems in a book from 1824. This book was a collection of papers from a traveling horn-player. The poems were dedicated to the composer Carl Maria von Weber. Schubert used the order of the poems to build his story. He kept the first twelve poems together as one group. He then added the next twelve as a continuation.

Schubert worked on this music during a very hard time in his life. He was often sick and felt very gloomy. His friends noticed that he was in a sad mood. One friend named Joseph von Spaun said Schubert was very depressed. Schubert even told his friends he had "terrifying songs" to play. He finished correcting the music for the last song, "Der Leiermann," near the end of his life. The songs were published in 1828 by Tobias Haslinger. The second part was published on December 30, 1828. Schubert died on November 19, 1828, before the final part was fully out.

Today, Winterreise is a very important part of music history. It is a masterwork of the German Lied, which is a type of art song. Many great singers have performed these songs in concert halls. The songs are difficult because they require a lot of skill. A singer must show deep feelings to tell the story well. The music can feel like a tragic opera because it is so dramatic. It shows how a person moves from sadness to a quiet kind of peace. Even though the songs are old, they still touch people's hearts today.
