The Winter War was a conflict between Finland and the Soviet Union. It began on 30 November 1939. This happened just three months after World War II started. The Soviet Union invaded Finland to take some of its land. They claimed they needed this land for security reasons. They wanted to protect the city of Leningrad from the Finnish border.

The war was a hard job for both sides. The Soviet Union had a much larger military. They had many more tanks and aircraft than the Finns. However, the Soviet army suffered very heavy losses at first. They made very little progress in the beginning. The fighting took place in many places like Taipale and Kollaa. Battles also happened on the Raate Road and in Lapland.

Finland and the Soviet Union had a long history together. Long ago, Finland was part of the Kingdom of Sweden. Then, the Russian Empire conquered Finland during the Finnish War. Finland became an autonomous state within Russia for a long time. In 1917, Finland finally declared its independence. The Soviet government recognized this new nation three weeks later.

Many things changed during the three and a half months of fighting. In February 1940, the Soviets changed their tactics. They renewed their attack and broke through Finnish defenses. The Finnish army was near its breaking point. The commander-in-chief, Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim, urged a peace deal. On 13 March 1940, they signed the Moscow Peace Treaty. Finland had to give 9% of its territory to the Soviet Union.

This war had a big impact on the world. The League of Nations said the Soviet attack was illegal. Because of this, they expelled the Soviet Union from the group. The poor performance of the Red Army surprised many people. It even made Adolf Hitler believe he could attack the Soviet Union. Later, in June 1941, a new war called the Continuation War began. Finland kept its sovereignty and its reputation grew stronger.
