The Allies wanted to protect sea paths to Australia. They also wanted to attack a large Japanese base at Rabaul. Both sides used ships, planes, and soldiers to fight. The battle moved from small landings to a very long struggle. The goal was to control the islands and the water around them.

The campaign began in the summer of 1942.

On August 7, 1942, Allied forces landed on several islands. These islands were Guadalcanal, Tulagi, and Florida Island. Most of the landing soldiers were U.S. Marines. At first, the Japanese did not fight back very much. But the situation changed very quickly after that. Both sides started sending many more people to the islands. This made the fight last for many months.

Many leaders were in charge during this time.

For the Allies, Robert L. Ghormley was in command. He reported to Chester W. Nimitz. For the Japanese, Isoroku Yamamoto led the fleet. Harukishi Hyakutake led the Seventeenth Army. The Allies worked hard to hold Henderson Field on the island. The Japanese tried to take this airfield back in September and October. Many naval battles also happened, like the Battle of Savo Island. The Naval Battle of Guadalcanal was a major win for the Allies.

This campaign was a turning point in the war. Before this, the Allies were mostly defending their lands. After this, they began to take the lead.

The Japanese decided to leave the island in December 1942. They moved their last forces out by February 9, 1943. This victory allowed the Allies to start new attacks. They went on to fight in the Gilbert and Marshall Islands. They also fought in the Philippines later in the war. The win at Guadalcanal helped the Allies gain control of the Pacific.
