The Allies wanted to win in North Africa to help their fight against Germany and Italy. This plan was a compromise between different leaders. The British wanted to secure victory in North Africa. The Americans wanted a chance to start fighting Nazi Germany on a limited scale.

This mission helped the two nations work toward the same goal.

To make the plan work, the Allies used three different groups of ships. These were called task forces. They aimed to take control of key ports and airports. The first was the Western Task Force, which headed to Casablanca.

The second was the Centre Task Force, which went to Oran. The third was the Eastern Task Force, which targeted Algiers.

Each group had a specific job to do.

Leaders spent a long time planning this mission. In December 1941, the United States joined the war. British and American leaders met in Washington D.C. to discuss strategy. Winston Churchill, the British leader, suggested invading North Africa. General George Marshall and Admiral Ernest King did not like this idea at first. However, President Franklin D. Roosevelt agreed to the plan to support Russia. On August 14, 1942, General Dwight D. Eisenhower was chosen to lead the forces.

He set up his headquarters in London to manage the operation.

Many different people and numbers were part of the invasion. The Western Task Force had 35,000 troops and over 100 ships. It was led by Major General George S. Patton.

The Centre Task Force had 18,500 troops. The Eastern Task Force included about 20,000 troops. The Vichy French forces in the area had around 125,000 soldiers. They also had 500 aircraft and 210 tanks.

These forces were spread across Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria.

The landings were not always easy. In Casablanca, the troops faced bad weather and a short siege. In Oran, ships hit shallow water and had to use big guns to make the city surrender.

In Algiers, the Eastern Task Force met less trouble and moved inland quickly. After the fighting, Admiral François Darlan ordered the French forces to cooperate with the Allies. This helped change the situation in North Africa. This event was a big step in the larger war.
