This campaign was very important for the war in North Africa. It helped decide who would control the Mediterranean Sea.

Moving supplies was a very hard job in the desert. The North African coast has very few natural harbors. The British base in Egypt was far from the Italian ports in Libya.

Because of this, both sides struggled to move food and gear. The British had to take a very long path around Africa to get supplies. This path went around the Cape of Good Hope and through the Indian Ocean. Control of the sea was a constant struggle between the British and Italian navies. This made the fighting in the desert go on for a long time.

The campaign began because of a plan called Operation Torch. The Allies decided to land troops in Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia.

They wanted to take the North African coast to make shipping easier. On 8 November 1942, Allied troops landed at Oran, Algiers, and Casablanca. The goal was to move east and take the city of Tunis. The Allies hoped to reach Tunisia before the Axis could send more help. However, the Axis moved much faster than the Allies expected.

Germany and Italy sent many troops and machines to Tunisia very quickly.

They used planes to fly over 15,000 men into the area. They also brought 176 tanks and many vehicles by ship.

German groups like the 10th Panzer Division arrived early in the fight. Even though the Allies tried to sink Axis supply ships, the Axis forces were already there. The fighting was difficult because of the mountains and the rainy winter weather.

In the end, the Allied forces won a big victory. They used many attacks from the east and the west.

They also worked hard to stop Axis ships from bringing more supplies. This pressure led to the final defeat of the Axis in Tunisia. Over 260,000 German and Italian troops were taken as prisoners of war.
