Moving supplies was a very hard job in the desert. The North African coast has very few natural harbors. The British base in Egypt was far from the Italian ports in Libya.

The Tunisian campaign was a major series of battles in North Africa during the Second World War. It took place between 17 November 1942 and 13 May 1943.
Before the fighting in Tunisia, the North African war was defined by supply problems. The coast has very few natural harbors for ships. The main British base was at Alexandria, which was far from the Italian port of Tripoli.
In 1942, the Allies planned a major operation called Operation Torch. They decided to land troops in Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. The goal was to secure the North African coast. This would allow Allied ships to use the Mediterranean more easily. On 8 November 1942, troops landed at Oran, Algiers, and Casablanca. The Allies hoped to move east quickly to capture the city of Tunis. They wanted to reach Tunisia before the Axis could reinforce the area.
However, the Axis forces reacted much faster than the Allies expected.

The geography of Tunisia made the fighting very difficult. The terrain includes the Atlas Mountains, which run along the western border.
The Allies eventually changed their strategy to defeat the Axis. They launched massive assaults from both the east and the west. They also focused on interdicting, or cutting off, Axis supply lines. This meant stopping the ships and planes from bringing more gear to the troops. The Allied air force and navy worked together to pressure the Axis forces. As the Axis lost their ability to get supplies, they were pushed back. This pressure eventually led to a decisive victory for the Allies in May 1943.
The scale of the victory was very large. Over 260,000 German and Italian troops were taken as prisoners of war.
