The Kokoda Track campaign was a major land battle during the Pacific War.

It took place in the Australian Territory of Papua from July to November 1942. The fighting happened along a narrow foot track through the mountains. This path is known as the Kokoda Track. The Japanese military wanted to capture Port Moresby. They hoped to use this path to reach the town from the north. By doing this, they could try to isolate Australia from the United States.

Moving through the mountains was a very hard job for everyone. The terrain was filled with dense jungle and steep hills. The weather was often hot and humid with lots of rain. At higher elevations, it could become very cold and foggy.

Soldiers had to deal with many tropical diseases. Malaria was a very common problem for the troops. Other illnesses included dengue fever and dysentery. Because there were few roads, people had to carry heavy loads. This made moving food and supplies a constant struggle.

The fighting began when Japanese forces landed near Gona and Buna on 21 July 1942.

They quickly captured the village of Kokoda and its airfield on 29 July. Australian and Papuan land forces fought to stop them. The Japanese forces pushed the Australians back for many weeks. At one point, the Japanese reached within sight of Port Moresby. However, they had to withdraw on 26 September. This was because they had run out of supplies. They had also been ordered to pull back due to events at Guadalcanal.

Many different groups of people were involved in the struggle.

Major General Tomitarō Horii led the Japanese South Seas Detachment. On the other side, Australian and Papuan forces fought under the New Guinea Force. Brigadier Kenneth Eather led the 25th Brigade during the fight at Ioribaiwa. General Douglas MacArthur was the Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in the area. General Sir Thomas Blamey was the commander of Allied Land Forces. The Australian 7th Division later helped win the campaign near the end of the year.

This campaign changed how armies fight in the jungle.

At first, the Australians were not prepared for this environment. They did not have the right equipment for the thick trees. They also lacked heavy guns like artillery or mortars. The Japanese had an advantage because they carried mountain guns into the hills. The lessons learned here led to new training and better gear. These changes helped soldiers in many future battles. Today, the story of the Kokoda Track is a very important part of Australian history.
