Wimbledon is the most famous tennis tournament in the world.

It is part of the four Grand Slam tennis events held every year. This tournament is special because it is the oldest one. It takes place in Wimbledon, London. Most big tennis matches are played on hard ground. However, Wimbledon is the only major tournament played on grass. This is the traditional way to play the game. People around the world watch these matches with great pride.

There are many unique ways the tournament works. Players must follow a strict rule to wear all-white clothing. Fans often enjoy eating strawberries and cream while they watch. The tournament also has very little advertising from big companies. One company, Slazenger, has provided the tennis balls since 1902. This is the longest-running sports sponsorship in the world.

Matches can even happen late at night under bright lights. This is possible because of a night-time curfew.

The history of the tournament began a long time ago. The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club was founded in 1868. At first, the club was mostly for playing croquet. In 1876, they added lawn tennis to their activities. The very first championship started on July 9, 1877.

Only one event was held that first year. It was the Gentlemen's Singles competition. A man named Spencer Gore won that first big title. He won the match in only 48 minutes.

Wimbledon has changed a lot through the years. The club moved to its current home on Church Road in 1922. In 2009, they added a special retractable roof to Centre Court. This roof helps players keep playing even when it rains.

The tournament has faced hard times too. It was not held during World War II. It was also cancelled in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2025, electronic systems will start calling the lines instead of human judges.

Today, Wimbledon links many different people together. It is a place where top players from every nation compete.

Players come from places like Australia, Brazil, and many others. The tournament is a major part of the summer season. It usually happens over two weeks in late June or early July. The biggest matches are the finals on the last weekend. People look forward to these matches every single year. It remains a grand tradition for the whole world.
